Traditional Weapons

Ninjutsu encompasses a vast arsenal of traditional Japanese weapons. Weapon skill is developed as a natural extension of taijutsu — the weapon becomes a fluid part of the wielder.

Students at Kashiwa Bujinkan train in both basic and exotic weapons. Weapons training is not a separate curriculum — it grows organically from your body movement skills. Every weapon listed below has been part of the ninja tradition for centuries, and each is still trained today.

Weapons training is included in your monthly tuition. No separate fees, no special classes required.

⚔️ Bladed Weapons

The sword arts form a cornerstone of Bujinkan training.

Katana — traditional Japanese sword
Katana
Standard size and most common type of Japanese sword. The primary weapon of the samurai and a core training tool in the Bujinkan system.
Shinobigatana — ninja sword
Shinobigatana / Ninja-tō 忍刀
A shorter blade with a standard-length handle. The longer sheath conceals items or messages. The shorter blade allows for a quicker draw in close quarters.
Wakizashi — short companion sword
Wakizashi / Shōtō 脇差
The "short sword" — traditionally worn as a companion to the katana by the samurai class.
Tantō — short Japanese knife
Tantō 短刀
A short, single-edged knife. Used for close-range combat and utility purposes.
Nodachi — large battlefield sword
Nodachi 野太刀
Large, curved battlefield sword. Designed for use against cavalry and in open field engagements.
Kama — sickle weapon
Kama
A sickle typically used for gardening — and for close combat when disguised as a common farmer.
Kusarigama — sickle and chain weapon
Kusarigama 鎖鎌
A sickle with a chain attached and an iron weight at the other end. Combines cutting, entangling, and striking at variable range.
Naginata — Japanese halberd

The Japanese halberd — a long pole with a curved blade. Comes in a variety of blade shapes and sizes.

🏹 Staff & Pole Weapons

Distance management, leverage, and versatility.

Hanbō — three-foot wooden staff
Hanbō 半棒
A 3-foot stick — "walking cane" height. Easily concealed and devastatingly effective at close range.
Jō — four-foot walking staff
A 4-foot walking staff — "chin height." Bridges the gap between hanbo and full staff techniques.
Rokushaku Bō — six-foot staff
Rokushaku Bō 六尺棒
The 6-foot staff. One of the most versatile weapons in the arsenal — used for striking, sweeping, and leverage techniques.
Yari — Japanese spear
Yari
A straight-bladed spear. Designed for thrusting and keeping opponents at maximum distance.
Bisento 眉尖刀
Large-bladed halberd — very heavy and difficult to wield. A battlefield weapon requiring significant skill and strength.

🎯 Throwing & Concealed Weapons

The tools most associated with the ninja tradition.

Hira Shuriken — flat throwing stars
Hira Shuriken 手裏剣
Flat metal throwing plates with three or more points. Used to distract, injure, or create distance — not as a primary weapon.
Bō Shuriken — spike throwing weapons
Bō Shuriken 棒手裏剣
Spike or needle-shaped throwing weapons. Require precision technique and practice to master.
Tetsubishi — spiked caltrops
Tetsubishi 撒菱
Spiked caltrops thrown on the ground to slow enemy pursuit and damage bare feet. A classic escape tool.
Kunai — utility and throwing tool
Kunai 苦無
A utilitarian tool similar to a trowel — used for digging, prying, fighting, or throwing.
Metsubushi — blinding powder container
Metsubushi 目潰し
"Sight removers" — containers holding blinding powders used to disorient the enemy. A core ninja escape and evasion tool.
Fukiya — blowgun and darts
Fukiya 吹矢
A hollow blowgun tube for shooting darts — or used to breathe underwater during aquatic concealment.

⛓️ Chain & Flexible Weapons

Unpredictable, entangling, and devastating at variable range.

Kusarifundō — weighted chain weapon
Kusarifundō 鎖分銅
A short chain with small iron weights at either end. Concealable and effective for striking and entangling at close range.

🛡️ Specialty & Defensive Weapons

Tools of restraint, misdirection, and close protection.

Jutte 十手
A sword-breaking and restraint weapon — a metal rod with a grip and a single side prong. Used by feudal-era police and bodyguards.
Tessen — iron war fan
Tessen 鉄扇
An iron war fan — either functional or a solid bar disguised as a folding fan. Allowed in places where swords were forbidden.
